ATV Safety
A number of our friends and neighbors have been injured recently on ATVs. We think it is timely to remember a few common sense rules to follow when operating an ATV. Here are a few from the ATV Safety Institute.
1.Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.
2.Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law – another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway.
3.Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
4.Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.
5.Ride an ATV that’s right for your age.
6.Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.
7.Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
8.Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourseSM and the free online E-Course. Visit ATVsafety.org or call 800.887.2887.
Congratulations Columbia County Fire Dept
The Columbia County Fire Department and the Columbia County Board of Commissioners deserve a big congratulations for job well done. Yesterday, Chief David Boozer reported the fire protection grade (officially called Public Protection Class) has improved from a 5 to a 4 in areas of the county near fire hydrants. Low numbers mean fire protection is good. Insurance companies reward communities with strong fire protection with lower fire insurance rates. While homeowners will likely not see a premium decrease in their home insurance, business owners should see slight premium reductions over the next 12 months. Please let your commissioners know they are on the right track.
Grilling Safety Tips
Labor Day is around the corner and there will be a lot of grilling. Sharing a link about grilling safety from National Fire Protection Association. Take a look and comment if you have additional good ideas.
If your breaker switch flips often
If your breaker switch flips often, this is a sign you may have a problem. Breakers are designed to flip when more electricity is flowing through the wire than designed. This means the wires in your wall could be heating up. Hot wires cause fires. Instead of flipping the breaker back on and going about your business, we recommend a call to your electrician to resolve the problem. Call us if you need more details 386-752-8660
Hip roof can save you dollars
If you wonder why many of the new home are being built with hip roofs, one of the reasons is homeowner insurance savings. Wind flows over a hip roof much easier than a gabled roof, causing less stress on the structure in a windstorm. Insurance companies recognize this and provide homeowner premium discounts for homes with hip roofs.
