Lightning damage is covered
The storm that raged over Columbia County late Monday night might safely be considered an epic lightning event. Few Columbia County-ans slept as lightning struck minute by minute throughout the night. As expected, we have received numerous lightning claims in our office over the last two days. Lightning is a “covered peril” under most property insurance policies, even basic peril policies.
We want to alert you to a little known provision of the Homeowner (HO-3) coverage form. Did you know that there is coverage for trees damaged by lightning? In fact, up to $500 is available per any one tree, shrub, plant or lawn located at your residence premises when damaged by lightning, fire, vandalism, theft and a few other perils. Tree damage from windstorm, however, is not covered.
If you are making a claim for lightning damage to your property, don’t forget to inspect your trees for damage; additional payments may be available to you. Call us at (386) 752-8660 if you would like to learn more.
